Culture makes us who we are. It is that simple. I was in my Anthropology class yesterday and I was stunned at some of the rite of passage rituals of a small group of people in the Highlands of the island of New Guiena. Where did this odd idea come from... why in the world would they do that...science tells us otherwise... were some of my thoughts. But then I remembered some of my rituals that may seem odd to people of a different culture; like lip stick and flirting. If these Highlander people saw me applying lip stick and then using my colored lips to attract men I am sure they would mark me as strange and wonder why on Earth I would do such things, like I turn my head in disapproval of their homo erotic behaviors. But if our places were switched at birth we would be singing reversed melodies. Interestingly sick don't you think?
