ponder this

But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Sing and dance together and be joyous,
but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone
though they quiver with the same music.

And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillers of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grass grow
not in each other's shadow.

--Kahlil Gibran (Prophet, 19-20)

This is beautiful and so true. I really believe that we need to be one and have strong relationships, but as this suggests, we also need to have some space and do some things on our own. I've always advocated having 'girlfriend' or 'guy' time without each other. I think that alone time helps to strengthen relationships. What really struck me was the analogy to the temple pillars standing apart. If they were stuck together they wouldn't be able to hold up that sacred edifice, but by standing apart they are actually working together more efficiently. So...my interpretation, being together and close is so important, but having time apart can be just as needed to keep a strong bond.

You need to first be your own, before you can be anothers

I totally agree that couples do best when they enjoy time together but also time to explore their talents as individuals. It reminds me of President Hinckley and how he would save he allowed his wife to soar with her talents (or something to that effect). I should share this with my parents. My dad is about to retire and my mom is worried she wont have any space without him traveling.
