Becoming Jane, a great experience

I traveled down to North Carolina this past weekend with my closest friends to visit our friend who recently became an Investment banking widow, her husband works mad hours. While we were there we took in a show, it was Becoming Jane, the film about Jane Austen.

First things first, don't let the rating fool you. It should have been rated PG-13. It was a very grown up PG, not for kids. It had some very strong adult themes and some brief nudity but with that said for conscience sake I want to take you there.

This film was fantastic! This movie was the most extrordinary love story! It was the kind of movie that you think about for days afterward and can't stop talking about. The actors have a deep chemistry which surprised me. Anne Hathaway whilst being beautiful has not impressed me in times past with her acting skills but within this film she impresses with the help of her fellow actors.

I could see within this film, which was probably the intent of the movie, alluded themes and characters from her novels. I saw Lady Catherine, and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Predjudice, We saw themes of lost love and secret keeping from Sense and Sensabilty. We saw where she might try to experiment with genres in Northanger Abbey, her attempt at writing a Gothic novel like Ann Radclifff. We could even sense the need to write a novel of happy reunions such as in Persuation.

This film allowed us a glimpse into her pyche. It opened the doorway of her life letting us read what she knew. After seeing this movie as I pick up my worn copy of P&P for a yearly reading I will do so with more respect and love for her. Knowing now that she gave her heroines happy endings because that is one thing she lacked.

I don't know how truthful this movie was about the details of her realationships with others but I really hope there weren't too many creative lisences taken, i really hope she loved that passionatly.

Nice review, Kristin. I'd love to go see it. Maybe I can get Aaron to watch Claire once it comes to the dollar theater - if it comes. I want to see it so badly! If not I'll probably buy it when it comes to DVD - do you think its worth owning?

Sounds like a fantastic trip! Becoming Jane was a great movie, but I definitely agree - it needed to be PG-13! You can't have naked butts and only rate it 'G'. If I hadn't already seen it with the three best ladies in the world I would go see just based on your beautiful review!
