One car, two car, three car, four, that is what I did and it was such a bore!
Matt and I were away for the last couple of days. Nice right? Well, it was no romantic get away. Matt and his company had a big project in Kingston, NY and they needed some help. So Matt, being the generous loving man that he is volunteered me for the job. His boss thought it was a great idea and went ahead and put me on the payroll.
So I now officially am a part time field technician for Pennoni Associates. Never thought I’d be a field tech before, I’m still getting used to the sound of it.
We measured intersections, counted cars, I wore an orange fluorescent vest, plotted signs, and timed traffic lights. We sat for hours on end and pressed buttons as the cars passed. It was hot and humid and not very exciting. But it wasn’t bad. I saw so many people breaking the laws, running lights, and I think I even witnessed a drug deal! Those little things made the sitting and counting cars for hours more endurable, plus knowing that I got to go home with the man in charge made the time go by a little faster.
It was very nice to see Matt at work. He is a very good manager and engineer. He knows his stuff. He knows all the techno terms for light movements and intersections and a whole bunch of things. It was impressive. I realized that I have been taking the basic structure of an intersection for granted.
Although it is not my passion, at least I know so I can check civil engineer off my list of things to be when I grow up.The extra money is always welcome so I see more counting cars in my future. As I go about counting cars in my new part time employ at least I will be working with someone with whom I know I am passionate. What can I say, I love my traffic engineer!
